Chips was a mixed breed dog who belonged to Joan Young. He hiked over 1200 miles of the North Country Trail before dying at the age of only six from a fast-acting cancer. The boardwalk through Dead Mule Swamp was being built at this time and the Spirit of the Woods Chapter of the NCTA surprised her by arranging this dedication with the Forest Service.

Since canine companions are important to many hikers, the dedication was expanded to include all the wonderful dogs who have hiked with us.
